Invited Review Engineering of single molecules with a scanning tunneling microscope tip

چکیده
The rapid progress in molecular manipulation with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip opens up entirely new opportunities in nanoscience and technology. With these advances, the ultimate chemical reaction steps such as dissociation, diffusion, adsorption, re-adsorption and bond formation processes become possible to be performed by using the STM tip at the single molecule level with an atomic scale precision. By using a variety of manipulation techniques in a systematic and step-by-step manner, a complete chemical reaction sequence has been induced with the STM tip leading to the synthesis of molecules on an individual basis. In this paper, various STM manipulation techniques useful in the single molecule engineering process are reviewed, and their impact on the future of nanoscience and technology is discussed. c © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Single atom/molecule manipulation with a scanning-tunneling-microscope STM tip is an innovative experimental technique of nanoscience. Using a STM tip as an engineering or analytical tool, artificial atomic-scale structures can be fabricated, novel quantum phenomena can be probed, and properties of single atoms and molecules can be studied at an atomic level. The STM manipulations can be perfor...
متن کاملSelective Bond Breaking of Single Iodobenzene Molecules with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope Tip
Controlled step-by-step dissociation of single iodobenzene molecules has been performed at Cu(111) step-edges using tunneling electrons from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip at 12 K. We show that the threshold tunneling electron energies to break a single bond inside a polyatomic molecule can be determined by using I-V spectroscopy of single molecules. Electron energies of 1.5±0.1 eV a...
متن کاملControlled low-temperature molecular manipulation of sexiphenyl molecules on Ag111 using scanning tunneling microscopy.
A novel scanning tunneling microscope manipulation scheme for a controlled molecular transport of weakly adsorbed molecules is demonstrated. Single sexiphenyl molecules adsorbed on a Ag(111) surface at 6 K are shot towards single silver atoms by excitation with the tip. To achieve atomically straight shooting paths, an electron resonator consisting of linear standing-wave fronts is constructed....

We report the nonlocal desorption of chlorobenzene molecules from the Si(111)-(7×7) surface by charge injection from the laterally distant tip of a scanning tunneling microscope and demonstrate remote control of the manipulation process by precise selection of the atomic site for injection. Nonlocal desorption decays exponentially as a function of radial distance (decay length ∼100 A) from the...
